|MEMORIAL FOR THE VICTIMS OF THE FORMER PRENZLAUERALLEE PRISON
Entry “Oppose, Fulfill, Participate” to the invited competition, Berlin, 2004
The idea touches on the notions of opposition, reparation, and the fulfillment of that which, under unjust conditions of detention, is deniedi.e., the fulfillment of basic human needs and rights. The garage of the concrete-block tower at the site will be repurposed into a showcase or pavilion that can be entered.
"Positive Images,” which are visible both from within and without the display windows, treat, in contrast, the meanings of being handed over, hunger, neglect, thirst, sleep deprivation and isolation. Large-format photographs show the fulfillment of these needs. Across from each image is a quote from one of the affected persons. The monument should be not only a marker at the site of what happened, but should become a place, a site, itself, filled with life, at which can be found both information and time for reflection, at which thoughts can be exchanged and feelings developed.
In its rooms, each midday, a nourishing and tasty stew will be offered for a reasonable price; water is free and visitors can drink as much as they like.
